There is always those times when you run into something good and you don’t realized how good it was until it is gone and you aren’t able to snag a bottle. Well this whiskey from Great Lakes Distillery was one that I had on vacation in Wisconsin and I could never find a bottle of it before I left the state. Well thanks to friends who live in Chicago and were venturing up to Wisconsin (thank you Mark K), I was able to get a bottle snagged and thanks to a co-worker who had training in Chicago (thank you Eric), I was able to secure a bottle for our Whiskey On The Rails podcast (and blog) for this week. I guess the moral of the story, be appreciative that both Cubs fans and Cardinals fans can come together for great spirits.
So during the podcast, we do talk in great detail about this whiskey from enjoying it neat, on the rocks and of course with our awesome whisky stones. What we are going to talk about in this blog is how it was enjoyed while on vacation. If you haven’t had an opportunity to check out Kinnickinnic whiskey out of Great Lakes Distillery in Milwaukee, WI, let me tell you the perfect time to do it. It would be in late July during the EAA Airshow which happens near Oshkosh, WI. More specifically, the Friday before the huge airshow would conclude might be the perfect time to enjoy the spirits in this distillery.
While we were in Milwaukee, we stopped in to have a few rounds of spirits on that glorious Friday afternoon and figured nothing about the F-16’s and F-18’s flying up and down Lake Michigan, out from the city. They were practicing their moves for the next day where they were the highlight of the airshow… You wouldn’t think that the airplanes would buzz the city or go super-sonic through some tight corners and make you jump out of your chair.. You wouldn’t think that sitting outside the vibrations from them going over would handle the shaking of your drink so it was mixed perfectly.. You wouldn’t think that Maverick is going to buzz the tower either in the city.. Well all of those items happened and what was pretty cool, nobody really batted an eye to it.
We do talk more about this story and a few others during our podcast. However the feature in this podcast would be the whiskey. While we do apologize upfront for our attempt at pronouncing it correctly (and ultimately used the local term as KK) our opinions were spot on for the taste, color and overall feel of this whiskey. While both hosts disagreed on a few topics, we have added this Distillery to our November / December whiskey roadshow in the Great Lakes region of the United States.
At the end of the day, we got another great bourbon on the shelves and another great recording. We did enjoy having a lot of viewers on our periscope line (sponsored by Hotel Tango).
