As we always do for our blog, we like to take something out of the podcast and discuss it in more detail.    The biggest thing we talked about after the podcast was one simple name, BEAM…  A name that is etched in whiskey history for over 200 years and when the heritage is brought into the spirit, you have high expectations.   Neither of the hosts are shy by saying we are huge Jim Beam drinkers and are finding a lot more bourbon’s and whiskey’s that a “Beam” family member has had their hands in making or producing it.   So that was our conversation point when we were letting some of our fellow whiskey drinkers try the Yellowstone before we recorded our podcast.

To be honest, both of the hosts were a little confused with this bourbon upfront just by the feedback we got from our whiskey patrons in the bar.   The confusion was really based upon the lack of consistency in the feedback we got from everybody.   So and so tasted this and not that..   So and so had a burn while others felt nothing..   Granted we talk about that during the podcast and give our insight on what we tasted vs the notes that were provided from the Distillers PR Agency (which we both loved they reached out to us in general about this spirit).

If you haven’t had the opportunity to read the press release on this product that was posted on Whiskey On The Rails, Whiskey News, please take a moment and read the release.    You might have found some liquid gold in this bottle.  As always, we gotta thank our sponsors because without them we would be two guys with nothing to drink, nothing to drink out of and more importantly nothing to keep our drinks cold.   If you want to learn more about them, please click on the individual links below or feel free to click on the sponsor’s link at the top right corner of our webpage.  You can find each of their website, facebook and twitter links.

You know it is great when you can bring your friends out and have a great conversation about whiskey.   Well in this episode, you can quickly tell that all three have been friends for quite a few years.   What does that mean?    A great opportunity to talk whiskey and more importantly talk about some awesome characteristics of this Rittenhouse Rye.   While we will leave some of those details to the podcast, however if you want to hear some of the items that were left on the floor during our editing, well check out our recordings on our Hotel Tango Periscope line..

When we choose our bottles for the recording, one of three things usually happens..  We are given a great recommendation and go get the bottle..   We are given whiskey or bourbon to taste and review..  OR We randomly go into any local liquor or grocery store and snag a bottle for our recording..   Yes, we see big names and go with them but usually we have been trying to find extremely random bottles for our review.   We are starting to learn that Heaven Hill distillery is putting out a bunch of great items and during the podcast we really put our guest to the test to see if he could name anything from that distillery..  I guess we made it too easy since he immediately pulled out Heaven Hill Whiskey..

We are certainly learning, they have an extensive collection of spirits under one umbrella..  We aren’t trying to try everything they have but random selection has certainly introduced us to a collection of their whiskeys, bourbons and ryes…   So what we are going to say is simple, go random and see if you pull something from Heaven Hill’s shelf..

Now we will leave a lot of the descriptions in the podcast on how we tried the whiskey across the board and our personal opinions during our tasting..

Well in the podcast, you will get to hear more about our review of the bourbon but in this blog we wanted to tell you about the first time we learned about this distributor.    Both hosts are well rounded drinkers, we enjoy a variety of beverages and combinations.   Well, we were originally introduced to this distributor via a beer product they had available..  Oddly enough Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, yes beer that has whiskey on it..   High alcohol content and hours of enjoyment after you drink it.

So as we said, the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale was our original introduction.   Once the barrels were done aging the bourbon, they were used to fuel this 8.2 ABV content beer.   You got to enjoy this ale with all of the comforts of beer but with that great whiskey / bourbon under-lying taste which was awesome.    It took out the harshness of the bourbon (which may or may not be discussed in the podcast) with mixing it with their great ale taste.    So again, not saying that mixing the bourbon might be suggested during the podcast but we will certainly let you listen to the podcast to find out more…

The Quiet Man Irish Whiskey Launching in U.S. in January 2016

(St. Louis) January 5, 2016 — Luxco is proud to introduce its first-ever Irish whiskey, The Quiet Man, set to launch two varieties in the U.S. this month. The handcrafted Quiet Man is produced through Luxco’s partnership with Niche Drinks in Derry, Ireland, and is the first Irish whiskey bottled in Derry in more than 100 years.

The Quiet Man brand was born when Ciaran Mulgrew, managing director and co-owner of Niche Drinks, and founder of The Quiet Man, decided to create a whiskey to honor his father, John Mulgrew.

“The Quiet Man is a completely unique combination of hand selected whiskies, finished in first-fill bourbon barrels, creating sweet and spicy notes,” Ciaran Mulgrew said. “In more than 50 years behind the bar, my father saw and heard it all, but like all good bartenders, John Mulgrew was true to the code and told no tales. He was ‘The Quiet Man,’ or as they say in the pubs of Ireland, ‘An Fear Ciuin.’”

Distilled in traditional Irish whiskey pot stills matured in oak barrels and recasked in first-fill bourbon casks, The Quiet Man will be available in two varieties: The Quiet Man Traditional Blended Irish Whiskey and The Quiet Man 8-Year Single Malt Irish Whiskey, both bottled at 80 proof and sold in 750ML bottles. The Traditional Blended Irish Whiskey is aged four years and has a high malt percentage, compared to most blends, offering a mellow and ultra-smooth finish. The Single Malt offers a smooth taste and floral notes for a premium experience.

“The difference between a good whiskey and a great whiskey lies not just in picking the best ingredients and having the most skilled distiller,” Mulgrew added. “It lies in selecting the finest barrels to let the whiskey mature in. Our unique process of finishing the aging in barrels that previously held bourbon but never whiskey allows The Quiet Man to soak up those wonderfully sweet yet spicy oak flavors, and the result is two great Irish whiskies.”

The Quiet Man is currently available in Germany, South Africa, Canada and Ireland, and was first bottled in June 2015. It will be available in the U.S. in January, through a joint venture between Luxco and Niche Drinks, whose partnership dates back to 1986.

Suggested retail price is $39.99 for the blended variety and $49.99 for the single malt variety.

Kicking Off 2016 With Bookers

When you kick off a new year, you have two choices..  You can either ease into the new year or hit the ground running into some positive actions..  Well, our wheels are turning in 2016 with a lot of positive momentum.   We have a lot of great things lined up over the next couple of months but our fuel to start this year would be another Jim Beam product, we are going with the biggest brother whiskey of Beam that we have had on the show..  The one, the only..  Bookers, Small Batch Bourbon..  High proof, high octane and high goals to kick off 2016.  Enjoy this new podcast and enjoy the ride…  Train…   Train….

As we have done before, we leave a ton of the details of the podcast in the podcast but give some different thoughts in our blog.    Well in this one, we were drinking Bookers and really started to reflect on our pure enjoyment for Jim Beam products.   It is funny that we can enjoy anything from the white label, to the single barrel to the small batches and every thing in-between.   This Bookers was certainly the highest proof that we have not only enjoyed from Jim Beam but have reviewed in general for a podcast review.

Coming in at 128 proof, we both indicated that this is going to be a great whiskey to have while we are up north in Wisconsin on our first road trip.    Ice Fishing and Whiskey, that goes hand in hand..    It is cold and what warms you up better than a quick nip of whiskey.   Well, we both agreed that this whiskey would be a great whiskey to drink on the entire day..   Well that theory lasted about 6 minutes because if we drank this whiskey the entire day, we would have a huge problem because we couldn’t leave the ice let alone find our cabin.    It is by far one of the smoothest high proof whiskeys that we have sampled and can really change your plans for the day if you choose to drink it the entire day.

Now we will leave a lot of the descriptions in the podcast because we extremely enjoyed this whiskey.    However you might be surprised which was the best way for us to enjoy it and what was the best way to enjoy it from Bookers..
