Jack Daniels Rolling With A 5 Vegas

As we moved into a new month, it is another week, another whiskey and also a new cigar theme this month.  As we were gearing up in Indianapolis for Carb Day (which is just before the Indianapolis 500), we broke out a bottle of Jack Daniels for this review.   We paired it up with a 5 Vegas cigar from Cigars International for our review of the First-Third in this episode.     We had been getting fueled up for this podcast with our Hotel Tango whiskey so we have to apologize upfront for the ADD breaks we were having because we were ready to go down to the track and continue our drinking experience.    Stay tuned for this ADD drinking experience..  Train..  Train….

In this blog, we will certainly talk about what we lacked upon in the podcast..  Our Whiskey..   It is sort of tough to talk about a whiskey that is known world-wide as a popular base-line whiskey for any situation..  Neat, Rock or as normally served, Whiskey and coke.     Both of the hosts in this podcast had been drinking our partners whiskey (Hotel Tango) like we usually do to fuel our podcast but we were extremely excited to get down to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a pre-race event.   So while we were enjoying Jack Daniels, we were really focused on our 5 Vegas this week.

We used the phrased repeatedly, it is Jack..  Everybody knows Jack..   Even though we are both Jim guys, we can’t lie with that Jack statement.    So it was sort of hard to stay on track for us for this whiskey review.   For that alone, we do apologize but we don’t apologize for the great combination of cigars and whiskey and general derails during our recording..  If you haven’t checked out a periscope recording (sponsored by Hotel Tango), you can certainly see a lot of items that didn’t make the podcast itself.

Now, we have said it before and we will keep saying it again.   We are so very greatly with the awesome line up of companies we are working with during this podcast.    We like to think of each of our sponsors / partners as part of our extended Whiskey On The Rails family.   When you get to pair up such great products, it is really fun to come out and record every week because we stand behind everything we talk about and enjoy each of the products we get to use during the show.      Even Eric and Rob get along during the podcast because of these great products and that right there is a miracle..

Taking The Road With Larceny And Ruination

Our latest whiskey that we brought onto the rails was introduced to one of the hosts during last years Indianapolis Pappy Fest..   Yes, that Pappy Fest which brought together a ton of awesome whiskeys and wines for the low price of $10.   Every time a new bottle of Larceny was opened, we were there to make sure it was tasted and tasted and tasted again.   We are willing to do that homework for our friends and listeners..   Since the other host hadn’t tried it, it was the perfect time to bring it in and pair it up with our last installment of Man O’War Ruination from Cigars International.   How did these two pair up?    Did Eric find his contractual Green M&M’s?   Find out during this podcast…  Train..  Train..

Well this blog again is talking about some of the items that we experienced while we weren’t recording during this podcast.   Apparently our technical member of the team didn’t expect to have a computer update before we were recording..  It took about 2 full hours for the update to get done on the computer, which immediately caused one of the hosts to go full tourette’s because the other host wasn’t paying attention to his requests on switching the computers so we could record..    After about an hour, the other host suggested to flip computers so we could record, which caused the other host to completely lose it..    If you were watching on our Hotel Tango periscope line, you got to experience true magic…  MAGIC!!!!

The joy of having that sort of a delay, we got a lot of time to enjoy multiple samples of our whiskey and went past the “first-third” of the cigar and made it at least half way through..     It is a good thing across the board because it gave us more time to get our thoughts together and enjoy what we were sampling..  Really it gave more of a complete review in our opinion..   So stay with us during this podcast…

Our Blood Oath Taken With Virtue

A few months ago we announced a new whiskey from Luxco called Blood Oath, Pact #2.   Well our day has finally come where we get to review this awesome mixture of whiskey.     Oddly enough, we recorded this on Friday the 13th, which not only was the whiskey flowing but some strange spirits were in the room..  In this case, we weren’t talking about the hosts.   We brought in the Man O’ War Virtue for our portion during the “first-third” from Cigar International.    At the end of the day, we survived the night but did we survive the Blood Oath with a side of Virtue?   Check out the podcast and find out..  Train..  Train…

We mention this during the podcast but we got to review this Blood Oath on Friday the 13th.   Late night recording, our recording area was dark with the spread of cigar smoke in the room while thunderstorms were on the way AND there was a full moon.    We couldn’t have created a better setting for this recording with this whiskey, which arrived in its own wooden coffin.     If you were on our Hotel Tango periscope line, you saw a bit of magic in Rob freaking out for no apparent reason.

At one point during our recording, there was a power surge on our dimmed lights and they started to come on brighter.   At that point, you can see Rob looking around like some crazed idiot trying to explain that the lights were coming on for no real reason..  This caused Eric to immediately start laughing at Rob’s expense and saying that our eyes adjust to the darkness and there is no real concern.    We left that apparent derail in the podcast so you can judge for yourself..   Was it a case where ones eyes were adjusting to the darkness or was there some spirit in the room that wanted some whiskey??   You make the call….

Makers 46 Lined Up With Man O War

We love it when good things come together at the right time.   Apparently since we were hitting up our 46th episode, it was time to pull our Makers 46 off the shelves and into the rails.   We got the bigger, stronger brother of Makers and paired it up with a Man O War (robusto) cigar.   In this episode, we got to introduce our new piece called the “first-third” of the cigar to give a review paired up with our whiskey of the week.   This episode has a little bit of everything for everybody.   So enjoy this podcast and enjoy some great recommendations from our hosts..  Train.. Train..

As we kick off our newest addition in our podcast review, the “first-third” is a great introduction to the first-third of your cigar experience.   With each of our whiskey reviews going forward, we are going to be spending about 5-7 minutes talking about the first-third of the cigar.   This was a great additional because if you had been viewing our Hotel Tango periscope line or not, you have seen that we have been enjoying cigars since almost the first inclusion of our periscope line.

Now a little bit of insight into our recordings and how we originally line up our choices for each week.   We have had Makers 46 sitting patiently on our shelves for about a month, since we knew when we wanted to put it into the mix.    While we were putting together our partnership information with Cigars International, we actually had to move up that announcement by a week so we could not only include our Makers 46 (for episode 46) but also include our review on Man O War.    We were both sort of leery on how the two would pair up against each other before we had recorded but you will certainly hear our review during the podcast on how they mixed and matched during the recording.

Cigars International Joining Whiskey On The Rails Partner Lineup

Whiskey On The Rails – May 4, 2016 – In our effort to drive whiskey knowledge and general enjoyment centered on whiskey, we realized we were missing a huge part of that overall enjoyment. During each of our sessions, we have been enjoying a wide variety of cigars from around the world. We realized the final piece that was missing in our overall puzzle would be where our community can go and find those great cigars and accessories. We looked to one of the largest cigar retailers on the planet to partner with Whiskey On The Rails.

Exciting New Partner Announcement Tomorrow

When we started this podcast, we had three goals we wanted to accomplish during the first year.   We wanted to expand our whiskey palate by trying as many different varieties of whiskeys that we could get our hands on both regionally and globally.   We wanted to do our best to bring people together with different ways to enjoy their whiskeys..   Finally, we wanted to complete our puzzle by bringing together some outstanding cigars to pair with these whiskeys.

We originally paired with GlenCairn Whisky Glass Company to bring together some awesome whisky glasses for people to really enjoy their whiskeys.   The overall appearance of the glasses really stepped up your appreciation of the whiskeys because not only did the look cool but helped your senses by really catching all of the smells before you enjoyed your spirits.    The Glencairn Whisky Glass is a revolutionary whisky glass that really lets one savor the taste and complexity of fine whisky. These are great to use for any of your Single Malt Whisky’s, Irish Whiskey’s, and also your single barrel bourbons. With the tapered mouth, you are able to really smell all of the nuances the whisky has to offer. Any malt advocate will love this glass!

The second partner we partnered with really helped one of our hosts appreciation for his enjoyment of whiskey.   He loved his whiskey cold but didn’t really want to add ice to his whiskey and dilute it down.  So we brought on board Whisky Stones and they do exactly what they say, chill down your whiskey with no dilution.   Whisky Stones – the original. Simple. Straightforward. Useful. These are the principles we had in mind when we invented Whisky Stones beverage cubes back in 2007. We’re proud to now include other products which deliver on this same distilled philosophy.

Finally, we knew we needed a great whiskey sponsor that we could get behind with an outstanding product and a great overall message.  That is when we engaged Hotel Tango out of Indianapolis, IN.  This is a great company that not only puts out a great selection of spirits but they also have a great background and message.  The name Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery reflects the military roots of the company’s founder, Travis. Returning home to Indiana after serving three combat tours as a Recon Marine, Travis wanted a special way to honor his wife and their marriage.   Hotel Tango opened its doors on September 15th, 2014 featuring its one-of-a-kind tasting room, bar, and retail establishment. Hand-crafted cocktails as well as bottles of each artisanal spirit are available for purchase including gin, moonshine, vodka and of course, whiskey (although it is currently aging in the rickhouse next door). Manufactured on site, Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery uses only the highest quality, locally sourced raw materials, including Indiana-grown corn.

Our newest addition is going to be announced on Wednesday, May 4th.    We are excited about this new partnership and really looking forward to all of the great items that our friends and followers will enjoy on a monthly basis.     We are so very appreciative for everything our sponsors and partners have done for Whiskey On The Rails over this past year.   We are looking forward to another great year and bringing people together for everything great about Whiskey..
