Double-Barrel To Kick Start Your Weekend

When we get a single charred barrel bourbon, you know you got a great opportunity for something good..  Regardless of the name, it could rock but then again it could suck..   Well, we skipped the single barrel and went with a Double-Barrel Whiskey from Jim Beam.   It was Jack last week, so we needed to step up with some Jim this week.   The bottle is open, the review is on..  What happened?   Did we talk whiskey?   Yes, we did..  Find out what we thought of it..   Train..  Train..

In this episode we were talking a little bit of Double-Barrel whiskey from Jim Beam.    This was our first chance to try out a Double-Barrel whiskey from Jim Beam, which we had double barred whiskey in the past (with a Makers 46).   We have learned a lot of people are starting to chase these types of whiskies like beer drinkers would chase hop tastes.

It gives a unique taste that can’t overly be replicated to get the same flavor.  Yes, that is a bold flavor but our batch would certainly be different with other batches..   Now, while we aren’t long on our blogs, we are always searching for great flavor..  Check out the podcast and learn more about our Double-Barrel podcast..

Now, we have said it before and we will keep saying it again.   We are so very greatly with the awesome line up of companies we are working with during this podcast.    We like to think of each of our sponsors / partners as part of our extended Whiskey On The Rails family.   When you get to pair up such great products, it is really fun to come out and record every week because we stand behind everything we talk about and enjoy each of the products we get to use during the show.      Even Eric and Rob get along during the podcast because of these great products and that right there is a miracle..

Jack Daniels Single Barrel Rye To Take The Lead

Thanks to a visit during Bourbon Fest in Indianapolis, one of the hosts had the opportunity to not only test but purchase a bottle of whiskey from Jack Daniels.    Alright, so that isn’t that big of a deal but for $15, we certainly stumbled upon some high price whiskey to sample the entire day and then buy it at a reduced cost.   Does that sound like a bigger deal?   Well if it does, then you should go and try a bottle of Jack Daniels Single Barrel Rye, at full price or free if you have a friend who purchased a bottle.   That is what we did this week since Eric purchased the bottle.   Where does it rank in 2017?   Maybe the name gives a hint..  Maybe not..  Find out during this podcast..   Train..  Train..

After a month of travel, illness and general medicated hangover and took us a few weeks to get back on schedule.    If you can’t self-medicate with whiskey, then that certainly won’t be a high point of the week.   So we kicked off what was left over from our general illnesses, jumped into the studio and got back on track with our recording schedule.

As we said in the introduction, this was a bottle that we initially sampled during our trip to Bourbon Fest in Indianapolis in mid-December.   $15, all you can drink.. No Proof is too high..  No sample is too small..   That was the motto of the day and sure enough, we found plenty of whiskeys that we are going to be reviewing this year.   This bottle was one that Eric purchased for his own stache because lets face it, he loves a great Rye.     Let me tell you, this Rye did not disappoint and for coming out of the box at 94 proof, it certainly didn’t stop the woooooooooo’s from being yelled at both Bourbon Fest and also behind the mic..

Sure during the podcast, we did try this Rye three ways but lets face it..   One way was the winner..  What was it?   Can’t give you all of the details..  Listen to the podcast and find out…

V2 Rebooted With Russell’s Reserve 10 Year

We have kicked the rust off the wheels and are out of the gate running in 2017.   With each week, we are bringing in a new whiskey for our tasting and review sessions.   Well this week, we have the 10 year Russell’s Reserve Bourbon sitting in our great GlenCairn Whisky Glasses ready for our review.   This was a cliff hanger choice after our week 1 selection of 2017..  How is the best way to you enjoy it?  Well you are 30 minutes away from that answer..   Train.. Train…

It is tough when you already start 2017 and Pappy Van Winkle is moving down the list on the best tasting Bourbon’s of 2017..  Yes, you read that correctly..  We got a new number one but that isn’t overly suprising if you listened to our last podcast.    That is all we are going to say in this blog..   Not that we are disappointed with Russell’s Reserve at all, just that Pappy Van Winkle didn’t measure up..

Christmas Branch Toasting Rowans Creek

It is that magical time of the year when the alcohol tastes just that much better when you are stuck with mixed company.    That magical time of the year when the whiskey make everybody just that much more tolerable or entertaining.   Well as the guys are gearing up for Christmas, we are drinking some 100.1 proof Rowans Creek whiskey.   Because we didn’t want to only have 100 proof whiskey, we needed that .1 one to really kickstart our holiday season.   How did this review go?   How will we end 2016?      We only know that next week, we will have another whiskey..   Train.. Train..

When you think of holiday’s, most family gatherings have some sort of alcohol mixed into the equation..   It is a tradition to sit around, have a few drinks and play some games as friends and family.   Well it is the perfect time of the year because people usually make treks out to visit those who they only see a couple of times a year.    While both of the hosts have family both local and down the road, we know the importance of family.    Well we both act like a couple of “Step Brothers”, we understand that this time of the year is geared towards the Christmas spirit and enjoying how our families enjoy the holiday..

So this blog won’t really talk about anything in the podcast, we hope that everybody has a great Christmas and enjoys the holiday season.  That is what is important, now being fueled with the right whiskey is another great way to make it through the day.

Basil Would Be Happy With Old Grand Dad

One of our favorite bottles of whiskey would be a delightful bottle of Basil Hayden.   That is certainly our go-to-whiskey when we are just sitting around at the bar and grabbing one off the shelf.   What both hosts learned, Basil was honored with a bottle of whiskey that was created by his grand-son   I guess it does make sense that Hayden created Old Grand Dad in honor of his grandfather.  So this week, we are drinking Bottled In Bond, Old Grand Dad, 100 Proof Whiskey..  It is certainly a throat catcher with the spice and taste which really split both hosts on our enjoyment of this whiskey.   Train..  Train..

Again, this is another week where we don’t think we are going to have a very long blog when it came to our whiskey review.    This certainly was another week of don’t judge a bottle by its label because you might miss out on something.   Well that and it was certainly another week to learn something about one of our favorite bottles of whiskey.

This week, we were drinking bottled in bond, 100 proof Old Grand Dad whiskey.   Which we just assumed that it might be in the rank of Evan Williams and Heaven Hill, not that we are saying those are low end bottles but just one end of the spectrum.   What we didn’t realize that Old Grand Dad is actually a whiskey that a grandson created in memory of his grandfather.   Yeah, great story right?   Well not just a random whiskey when that grandfather is Basil Hayden..  That is right, Basil Hayden..  That Basil Hayden..  One of our favorite whiskey that we have not only reviewed but had enjoyed well before that podcast entry.

Now this whiskey was really one that the hosts had a split decision during their entire review.   Now with that being said, we had a complete derail on this review because we weren’t sure whether or not this would be a great whiskey to give friends when they come over to visit, what is the best way to try the whiskey and again another week of judging the book by its cover.   We will leave plenty of the details in the podcast but this is a great teaser to get the blood flowing.

Thanksgiving Whiskey Feast With Wild Turkey 101

We are some hosts when it comes to Thanksgiving.   We aren’t only lining our tables with some great Turkey and fixing but quenching our thirst with some Wild Turkey 101.   Our GlenCairn Glasses were filled with Whiskey and we were entertained by our original guest sitting in the Hotel Tango Guest Seat, Patrick.   Patrick made his return after a day of waiting over night for his spot on the show, so really this was his attempt at getting ready for Black Friday.   Well what happens when you mix 101 proof whiskey with guys who were ready to drink?   Pure magic..   Train..  Train…

It is really that perfect time of the year when some awesome family holidays are lined up back to back.   Each of the hosts have a list of family traditions that really make the holidays.   While we were discussing this across each of the hosts, we found that we both have a completely different approach to our holiday festivities during Thanksgiving.    The biggest seems to be around a simple game..  Football..  While our pre-game seems to be the same:   food, whiskey and family..  The end of the story really seems to be completely different..  An American result depending upon how you look at it..

Most people will sit down with their Thanksgiving lunches (or dinners) and catch a days worth of football.  When you have three NFL games and a handful of College Football games, there is plenty of opportunities to watch some pigskin.    Well that is where Rob lives during his Thanksgiving experience with his friends and family..   Eric has a unique spin that seems like it should be replicated during the 4th of July timeframe.   As he describes it, they are the post office of Cornhole players..  No matter rain, sleet, snow or shine, they are playing Cornhole as a family..   Which again, traditions are great things when you are spending them with family.

Now we will say this during the podcast.   We had a great time bring back our buddy Patrick.   Everybody should have a friend like Patrick.   He always makes you laugh, he would do anything to help you out and he almost never says no to a whiskey drink.    Perfect guest for this holiday episode.   We hope that everybody enjoys their holidays with friends and family..

Out And Drinking On The North Forty Creek

It is never a bad time when you find a spirit you haven’t seen in years..  Even better when you get to have that experience all over again with some George Thorogood..  One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer with some awesome Forty Creek Barrel Select Canadian Whisky..  Yes, for the second time in the past few episodes, we brought in a Canadian Whisky for our review and drinking pleasure..  How did this turn out?   Did we declare a winner OR do we need to keep drinking??   We all know that answer but check out this podcast…  Train..  Train…

This blog won’t be as long as our blogs usually are when we are talking about our whiskey experience.  However this blog is going to be just a friendly word of advice..   When you are walking through cities and people want to invite you to try out something new, just say yes.   Whether it would be new food, new movies or new spirits..  You never know what you are going to get..   Well this whiskey was originally experienced about six years ago while we were attending a tradeshow in Dallas.   Forty Creek was doing a sampling for some local bars and distributors so get their spirits into the stores and bars.  Well we weren’t either of those but a simple yes, got us into the event to try the whiskey.  Granted the question was are we here for the whiskey sampling and your answer should ways be YES… Yes Ma’am, we are certainly here for that event..

What is the worst that can happen?    Now we aren’t going to discuss that during the podcast and on the blog.   I signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement that doesn’t expire until 2020 but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the whiskey and still have the t-shirt…  With that being said, if you can get yourself a bottle of Forty Creek, do yourself justice and get it!!!   You will certainly enjoy this bottle…

Hotel Tango Celebrates Its 2nd Year With Whiskey

When you have great company to drink with, you will never have a bad day..     That phrase doesn’t even begin to explain how much we enjoy drinking with our great sponsors…   On a beautiful fall morning, we invaded Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery in beautiful downtown Indianapolis.  Travis and Maggie opened their doors and bottles of whiskey for our discussion on the great things happening at their location.  If you are downtown on the 11th of November, stop by their location for their 2nd Anniversary extravaganza and grab a bottle of their newest whiskey!!!   Enjoy this great podcast and check out their awesome spirts..   Train..  Train…

Our blog is very special for this podcast because we got to go down and hang out with our friends down at Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery..   Hotel Tango was our original partner on Whiskey On The Rails partner line up and we have enjoyed a great deal of their whiskey.   Now we have had their whiskey before our recordings, while we have been bartending, while we have been playing golf, while we have been sailing, while we have been arguing and heck while I am typing out this blog.    We talk specifically about their whiskey (because we are a whiskey podcast) but they have a lot of award winning spirts across the board.

What makes them great is the people..   We haven’t met one person that we haven’t walked away saying hope to never talk with them again..   Everybody has a great story..  From the owners, to the distillers and to the mixologists.   Everybody has a great piece of this company and a great story to tell and that makes the place even that much more special.     Now you can come in and grab a bottle and leave and that right there would be a mistake..    Stay a while..  Get a drink..  Sit infront of the fireplace..  Enjoy the atmosphere..  Find Fletcher and know that Eric is honestly terrified of their bobcat..  Well terrified might not be the right word but he gets heckled by Fletcher…

End of the day..  We plan to be down there a lot more for recordings..   We plan to hit them up for more bottles of spirits..   Drinking their seasonal spirits and drinks..  Getting fueled before we head down to Pacers games and watch the misery..    More importantly, drinking some awesome whiskey and waiting to see what is next??   Find out what is next by coming into Hotel Tango and finding out more..

Monkey Shoulder Could Be A Great Holiday Gem

It is always special when we get to have some returning guests to the rails.   It is even easier when the trio of individuals are bartending and this is a great way to fuel the day.   As we were recording just before Halloween, we saw some promotional advertising for Monkey Shoulder.  It was labeled as Halloween’s Dracula Blood and we figured tis the season to scare and drink..   Lets bring it into the rails.    Did we scare anybody during this episode?    Are we still alive following the ghosts in the bar?   Did Uncle Bob make it through another episode?   All of these questions will be answered during this podcast..  Train..  Train…

With the guys not overly being Scotch guys, we had only brought in our second Scotch in the past 71 episodes.    So that is what made it a special return to the rails because this was completely an impulse purchase while at the liquor store..  Yes, while we enjoy plenty of donated bottles, we always enjoy something that catches our eyes and we need to buy..   Now the guy behind the bar thought that he used the monkey mind trick for me to buy it because they put it at the right level behind the cashier so people would see it and be intrigued.    Honestly, as I told him, I saw a facebook advertisement as it was the Halloween’s Blood for the season..  Which honestly, he told me I was wrong..

We did bring back our buddy Uncle Bob for this episode..   We brought him in for Uncle Bob Root Beer, so we felt bad after that recording.      He didn’t have a choice during that podcast but we let him choose his flavor of the day.    We did break out something during this episode which we hadn’t done during the 70 prior episodes and what we plan to do in the future.    We talked sports..  Yes, we talked a lot about this scotch but we did have a great little sports run during the end of this podcast.   As a teaser for the future, we will have him back for our super bowl episode where we talk shop and drink some whiskey.

Sipping On Some Bakers While Vacation Daydreaming

Our hosts are all geared up for an upcoming cruise and we had a serious case of day dreaming while drinking whiskey.    We were fueled with some 107 proof Bakers Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey while we were sitting in our “construction project studio”..    We were smoking a cigar during this episode but we decided to give that Bugatti Cigar its own podcast for a review because 107 proof really gets you going when you are running on empty.    Enjoy some whiskey banter and hop on board for this whiskey train..  Train..  Train..

This podcast really had something for everybody..  Pain, misery, laughing, crying and general whiskey hooligans.   We really tried to have a combined cigar and whiskey podcast but this one, we felt that we needed to drink some Bakers and just have a great time.   Now here is our disclaimer, we were completely smoking a Bugatti Cigar but when we took a break to cool down our whiskey with our whisky stones, we just decided to give The Boss its own Cigar podcast so we could talk more about that cigar and the four others we received in our care package.

Here is something we did discuss during our break and something that we haven’t done a bunch when it comes to our podcast.  Usually we stay pretty focused with a slight ADD derail during each podcast.   This one, it was two buddies just shooting the breeze and getting fueled with our 107 proof whiskey.   We did review it, repeatedly, however nothing is more fun than just hanging out with your buddy and drinking..   Shiny objects were everywhere and it shows at time but then again you gotta have off the cuff humor when you can..   Stay tuned for our Whiskey Wednesday podcast release for more information.
